Hair Habits Worth Your While

New year, new you! You’ve heard it a million times before. And while New Year’s resolutions are all well and good, we know the last thing you need is yet another lofty goal added onto your 2017 to-do list. So we decided instead to keep it simple. The road to shiny, strong, and otherwise stunning strands doesn’t have to be one of trial and tribulation. Au contraire! What do all healthy haired beauties have in common? They swear by four hair care habits so simple, you’ll wonder why you hadn’t thought of them yourself!

    1. Commit to regular haircuts.

Haircuts are your friend, not your foe! No matter how hard you’re striving to grow out your locks, don’t sacrifice face time with your stylist. Avoiding the salon is actually counterproductive to growing out your hair. The longer you procrastinate a haircut, the more prone your hair is to split ends and breakage, so you might not be gaining much length after all. And once your hair splits, there’s no way to repair it. Stylists recommend getting a trim every 6-8 weeks, depending on your hair type and condition. And while that may sound excessive, you’re sure to see a difference in the health of your hair. The healthier your hair, the longer it will grow!

    2. Extend your daily SPF habits.

You wouldn’t dream of leaving the house without properly protecting your skin and your hair shouldn’t be any different. The sun oxidizes your hair and dries it out, leaving it limp and lifeless. To prevent this hair horror, invest in a haircare product that packs a protective punch. Spritz your strands with a sun-shielding formula, such as Super Comb Prep & Protect, to keep your strands moisturized and your color vibrant.

    3. Go natural every now and again.

We love a blowout as much as the next darling, but too much heat can wreak havoc on your hair. Your hair needs a rest from all the styling stress it endures on the regular. Commit to going au naturale once or twice a week; let your hair air dry, avoid hot tools, and commit to leaving your locks alone! Not only is this good for your strands, it’s an easy way to switch up your usual look and add a bit of variety to your style routine. If you absolutely cannot fathom the thought of going heat-free, at least protect your hair properly. Always use a protective spray, like Thermal Styling Spray, before picking up a hot tool, no exceptions!

     4. Brush up on your brush etiquette.

When it comes to detangling, there are two things to consider – brush type and technique. When it comes to brush type, you want a hairbrush that will end your tyrannical tangle struggles without compromising the hair’s integrity. Enter, the L’eau de Mar Brush. Its flexible bristles abolish unwanted knots, without snapping the hair strand.

As for technique, split hair into sections, always starting from the bottom and working your way up. If you start at the root and brush downward, you’re pushing your tangles into one big knot, practically begging for split ends and distressed strands. Pro tip: hair is most susceptible to damage when it’s wet, so try to do most of your detangling before showering. It will make your post-shower comb out that much easier!
