The bobby pin is perhaps the most basic of all hair tools. But don’t let its simplicity fool you…these little guys pack a powerful punch. When it comes to versatility, the bobby pin is queen. They work with every hair length, texture, and style (just like our Mighty Hairspray) and are capable of so much more than your go-to messy bun. With a handful of bobby pins and the right tricks, there’s nothing you can’t do!
The Bobby Basics
If you find yourself going through a package of bobby pins on a single style, you’re probably using them incorrectly. Yup, there is in fact a right and wrong way to use these seemingly simple pins. I’ll let you in on this little known secret; the wavy side goes down, leaving the straight side exposed.
You also don’t need to capture every last strand of hair in your bobby pin to make your style stay. In fact, this is usually the reason your bobby pins end up everywhere but your hair. Instead, slide your pin through only a section of the hair you want to hold and voila…it’s like magic!
If your bobby pins no longer have those little plastic tips, it’s time to buy a new pack. Although they might not seem like much, these tips protect your hair from snagging, pulling, and eventually breakage. Trust me, it’s a worthy investment!
For all day hold, make sure you lock your bobby pins into place. To do this, insert the pin in the opposite direction that your hair is pulled. Then, twist the pin so the open end now faces the same direction as the hair and secure by pushing deeper into your head. Textured hair will hold a pin better, so if your silky hair is causing bobby slippage, try our Texture Styling Crème and let your worries fade away.
Sometimes, a hair elastic can take away from the elegance of your style. When this is the case, ditch ‘em and reach for the bobbies. Hiding your bobby pins is an easy way to achieve an effortless look that will stay put. You can use them to secure your braids, side-sweep your hair, or pull your hair away from your face with a few twists. While you will know your look took time, no one else will!
Oppositely, exposed bobby pins can make for an eye-catching (and inexpensive!) hair accessory. Use multiple pins to secure your hair in a design, such as a triangle. With just three pins you have a chic hair clip that adds just the right amount of sass to your style.
And that’s only a few of my favorite tricks – when it comes to bobby pins, the possibilities are endless! For more hair how-to’s, connect with us on social!
