So the short answer as to whether you need to use a sulfate free shampoo is a resounding YES. Let’s explore why and answer your most frequently asked questions about sulfates.
What Are Sulfates?
Sulfates are detergents (aka surfactants) commonly found in personal care products like body wash, face cleanser and, as you could have guessed, shampoo. They are also found in many cleaning supplies like laundry detergent and dish soap for their ability to create squeaky-clean surfaces.
The most common of all the sulfates is something known as sodium lauryl sulfate – or SLS for short. It’s absolutely NOT included in N4 products and we’ll go on to explain why not. SLS is a chemical, known as a surfactant and is highly effective in removing dirt and oil from the hair and skin.
How Do Sulfates Work?
These little bad boys, and we do mean bad, are like water babies! Imagine a tadpole for a minute with two ends – one which loves and one which hates water. When it comes to sulfates, the head is oil-soluble and traps dirt and grease, while the water-soluble tail then washes it clean away. At least, that’s the theory.
So far, so good? So what’s the problem with sulfates?
Well, we’re glad you asked! Let’s go back to that tadpole analogy again. The head can frequently get trapped and when it does, it causes irritation which can lead to a dry, itchy scalp. Because the sulfate molecules are so hardy and robust, they’re unable to differentiate between what is excess oil, and what is your hair and scalp’s own natural sebum. This means that they strip away everything they come into contact with, even the good stuff. Leaving behind hair that’s dry, brittle and prone to breakage, and potentially a scalp that is dry, itchy and inflamed.
